Gloria Westfall came face to face with death when Sharma Riggs pushed through the door of the Langton Soup Kitchen clutching her face and gasping for breath. Gloria was afraid COVID 19 had made its way to the north end of town when the small frail Black woman showed symptoms of the virus. "Save my daughter," were her last words before she died. Joel Clarkston, pastor of Langton's Quaker Meeting and manager of the Soup Kitchen, had an earlier visit from Sharma. She wanted someone to stop two corrupt policemen who were threatening her daughter and friends. She told Joel these policemen were allowing drugs and guns to be bought and sold at a nearby abandoned warehouse in her neighborhood. A part of town Gloria had ignored. Sam Wassem, a homeless man who worked at the soup kitchen for Joel and Gloria, interfered one too many times with the threats of the two menacing policemen, Simon and Jerry. Now Sam was in their line of fire. Sam befriended Deon Jones, from the terrorized neighborhood, who was found innocent after serving ten years for robbing a store and killing the owner. He became a target of the two corrupt policemen despite his proven innocence because the store owner was Simon's brother and Deon was a Black man. While bonding with Deon and falling in love with Sharma's daughter, Carlotta, Sam realized he could no longer risk the lives of his friends by keeping his secret.
